Patients should consult their healthcare provider for personalized advice and report any adverse reactions promptly. Regular follow-ups and appropriate monitoring are essential to ensure the safe and effective use of Tobramycin Dexamethasone ophthalmic suspension.

Product Description:

Tobramycin Dexamethasone Ophthalmic Suspension 3mg/1mg per mL (5 mL) is a combination eye medication that contains Tobramycin, an antibiotic, and Dexamethasone, a corticosteroid. This combination is used to treat eye infections and inflammation. Tobramycin works by inhibiting bacterial growth, specifically targeting a wide range of bacteria that cause infections. Dexamethasone reduces inflammation, redness, and swelling in the eyes. This formulation is commonly used to treat conditions such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, and other eye infections with an inflammatory component.

Indications:

Tobramycin Dexamethasone Ophthalmic Suspension is indicated for the following:

  • Bacterial Infections of the Eye with Inflammation: It is used for the treatment of ocular infections caused by susceptible bacteria, such as conjunctivitis or keratitis, in which inflammation is present.

  • Postoperative Inflammation: It is often prescribed after eye surgery to prevent or reduce inflammation and to treat bacterial infections that may develop.

It is important to use this medication as directed by a healthcare provider to prevent complications and ensure the best possible outcome.

Dosages:

  • General Dosage:

    • For bacterial conjunctivitis or keratitis: 1-2 drops of the suspension should be applied to the affected eye(s) every 4-6 hours. The frequency may be reduced after the infection is under control.

    • For post-operative inflammation: 1-2 drops of the suspension in the affected eye(s) 4 times daily, starting immediately after surgery, and continuing for as long as prescribed by the healthcare provider.

  • Administration:

    • Shake the bottle well before use to ensure proper suspension of the medication.

    • Wash hands before and after administering the drops.

    • Tilt the head back, pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket, and drop the prescribed amount of the suspension into the pocket without touching the eye with the dropper tip.

    • Blink several times to spread the medication across the surface of the eye.

Dosage and duration of treatment should be determined by the healthcare provider based on the severity of the infection and the patient’s response.

Side Effects:

Common side effects may include:

  • Eye irritation: Stinging, burning, or discomfort upon application.

  • Increased intraocular pressure: Long-term use of corticosteroids may increase the pressure inside the eye, which could lead to glaucoma.

  • Blurred vision: Temporary blurring or visual disturbances may occur, especially just after applying the drops.

  • Cataracts: Prolonged use of corticosteroids can increase the risk of cataracts.

  • Conjunctival hyperemia (redness of the eye).

  • Dryness or watery eyes: The eye may feel dry or excessively watery after using the medication.

Less common, but more serious side effects may include:

  • Infection: Corticosteroids like dexamethasone can increase the risk of developing fungal or viral eye infections.

  • Corneal ulceration: If the infection is not properly controlled, the cornea may be damaged.

  • Delayed wound healing: Dexamethasone can slow down the healing process of the eye.

If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider immediately:

  • Visual disturbances: Sudden loss of vision, changes in vision, or blurred vision that doesn't go away.

  • Eye pain: Severe or persistent pain in the eyes.

  • Severe allergic reactions: Swelling of the eyes, eyelids, or face, rash, itching, or difficulty breathing.

Contraindications:

Tobramycin Dexamethasone Ophthalmic Suspension should not be used in the following cases:

  • Hypersensitivity: If the patient is allergic to tobramycin, dexamethasone, or any of the other ingredients in the suspension, they should not use this medication.

  • Viral eye infections: It should not be used in patients with viral eye infections, including herpes simplex keratitis, as corticosteroids can exacerbate the infection.

  • Fungal infections: If the eye infection is caused by a fungus, this medication is contraindicated because steroids can worsen fungal infections.

  • Mycobacterial eye infections: If the infection is caused by mycobacteria, corticosteroids may aggravate the condition.

Warnings and Precautions:

  • Prolonged use: Long-term use of corticosteroids may lead to increased intraocular pressure, which could result in glaucoma and damage to the optic nerve.

  • Risk of secondary infections: As with all corticosteroid use, there is an increased risk of secondary bacterial, viral, or fungal infections in the eye.

  • Not for long-term use: This medication is typically prescribed for short-term use, and prolonged therapy may require monitoring of intraocular pressure and other eye health indicators.

  • Use in pregnancy: The safety of using this medication during pregnancy has not been established, so it should only be used if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

  • Use in breastfeeding: Caution should be exercised when using this medication in nursing mothers, as tobramycin may be excreted in breast milk.

Conclusion:

Tobramycin Dexamethasone Ophthalmic Suspension is an effective combination treatment for bacterial eye infections with an inflammatory component. It is crucial to follow the prescribed dosage and be aware of potential side effects, particularly those related to prolonged use. If you experience any severe symptoms, it is important to seek medical advice promptly. Always consult your healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and treatment tailored to your condition.
