500mg Film-Coated Tablet

Here is a comprehensive overview of Azithromycin (Thromaxin 500) 500mg Tablet 3's:

Product Description:

Azithromycin (Thromaxin 500) is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, thus preventing the growth of bacteria. Azithromycin is commonly used to treat a range of infections, including respiratory infections, skin infections, ear infections, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The 500mg tablet formulation is designed for convenient once-daily dosing and typically comes in a pack of 3 tablets (for a 3-day course of treatment), which is ideal for short courses of therapy.

Indications:

Azithromycin (Thromaxin 500) is indicated for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including:

  • Respiratory tract infections, such as:

    • Community-acquired pneumonia

    • Bronchitis

    • Sinusitis

    • Pharyngitis (sore throat)

  • Ear infections, such as otitis media.

  • Skin and soft tissue infections, such as cellulitis.

  • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as:

    • Chlamydia trachomatis

    • Gonorrhea (when used in combination with other antibiotics).

  • Genital infections and other bacterial infections as prescribed by a healthcare provider.

Azithromycin is not effective against viral infections, such as the common cold or flu.

Dosage:

The dosage of Azithromycin (Thromaxin 500) depends on the infection being treated. Below are general dosage guidelines:

  • For Respiratory Tract Infections (e.g., pneumonia, bronchitis):

    • Adults: Typically, 500mg on the first day, followed by 250mg once daily for the next 4 days (5-day course).

  • For Otitis Media (Ear Infection):

    • Adults and children over 6 months: 500mg once daily for 3 days.

  • For Sexually Transmitted Infections (e.g., Chlamydia):

    • Adults: A single dose of 1g (usually given as 2 tablets of 500mg).

  • For Skin and Soft Tissue Infections:

    • Adults: 500mg once daily for 3 days.

Note: It is important to follow the prescribed dosage instructions. Do not exceed the recommended dose or duration of treatment. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember unless it’s almost time for the next dose.

Side Effects:

While Azithromycin (Thromaxin 500) is generally well tolerated, it can cause side effects. Common side effects include:

  • Gastrointestinal disturbances:

    • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain.

    • Flatulence or bloating.

  • Headache or dizziness.

  • Skin reactions such as rash or itching.

Serious side effects (although rare) can include:

  • Cardiovascular effects: Azithromycin can cause QT interval prolongation, which can lead to arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats). This is more likely in individuals with a history of heart problems.

  • Severe allergic reactions: Symptoms include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or hives (anaphylaxis).

  • Liver problems: Symptoms such as jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), dark urine, or unusual fatigue could indicate liver issues.

  • Hearing problems: Rare cases of hearing loss have been reported, especially with prolonged use of higher doses.

If any of these serious side effects occur, seek medical attention immediately.

Contraindications:

Azithromycin (Thromaxin 500) should not be used in the following situations:

  • Hypersensitivity to Azithromycin, other macrolide antibiotics (such as erythromycin or clarithromycin), or any of the inactive ingredients in the tablet.

  • History of liver disease: Particularly severe liver dysfunction, as Azithromycin is metabolized in the liver.

  • QT interval prolongation: Azithromycin should be avoided in patients with a known history of QT prolongation or other heart conditions that predispose to arrhythmias.

  • Severe renal impairment: Caution is required in patients with significant kidney disease.

  • Pregnancy: Azithromycin is classified as Category B by the FDA, meaning it has not been shown to harm the fetus in animal studies, but it should still be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Consult a healthcare provider before use.

  • Breastfeeding: Azithromycin passes into breast milk, and while it is generally considered safe during breastfeeding, it should be used with caution. Discuss with a healthcare provider if breastfeeding.

  • Concomitant use with certain medications: Azithromycin should be avoided or used cautiously when taken with medications that prolong the QT interval (e.g., certain antiarrhythmic drugs, antipsychotics).

Precautions:

  • Kidney and liver function: Azithromycin should be used with caution in patients with pre-existing kidney or liver dysfunction. Regular monitoring may be needed.

  • Cardiac monitoring: Due to the risk of QT prolongation and arrhythmias, cardiac monitoring is recommended in patients with underlying heart conditions, especially those on medications that affect the heart.

  • Drug interactions: Azithromycin may interact with several medications, including warfarin (an anticoagulant), antacids containing aluminum or magnesium (which may decrease absorption), and certain antifungal drugs (e.g., ketoconazole). Always inform your healthcare provider of other medications you are taking.

Note: Always consult a healthcare provider before starting Azithromycin (Thromaxin 500) to ensure it is appropriate for your specific condition and health status. Follow the prescribed course and complete the full treatment to avoid resistance or recurrence of infection.
