Product Description:

Betamethasone Valerate (Betnoderm) 1mg/g (0.1% w/w) Corticosteroid Cream is a topical medication containing betamethasone valerate, a potent corticosteroid. It is formulated as a cream for cutaneous (skin) application. Betamethasone valerate is used to reduce inflammation, redness, swelling, and itching associated with various dermatological conditions. This cream is typically used for the management of inflammatory skin disorders, offering effective relief from symptoms caused by inflammation.

Each 5g tube of Betnoderm contains 1mg of betamethasone valerate per gram of cream (0.1% w/w).

Indications:

Betamethasone valerate cream is indicated for the treatment of various inflammatory skin conditions, including:

  1. Eczema (atopic dermatitis)

  2. Psoriasis

  3. Contact dermatitis (including allergic contact dermatitis)

  4. Seborrheic dermatitis

  5. Allergic reactions with associated skin inflammation

  6. Insect bites causing itching and swelling

  7. Other corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses

It is used to relieve symptoms such as itching, redness, swelling, and inflammation.

Dosage and Administration:

The dosage of Betnoderm 0.1% Cream varies depending on the severity of the condition and the response to treatment. However, the following guidelines are typically recommended:

  1. Adults and Children over 12 years:

    • Application: Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected area once or twice daily, or as directed by the healthcare provider.

    • Duration of treatment: The use of potent corticosteroids like betamethasone valerate should generally be limited to short-term therapy (usually 1-2 weeks). Prolonged use should be avoided due to potential side effects.

  2. Children under 12 years:

    • Application: The cream should be used cautiously and under the supervision of a healthcare provider. Lower-potency corticosteroids are often preferred for pediatric use.

It is essential to follow the prescribing instructions for proper application to minimize risks and ensure effectiveness.

Side Effects:

Like all medications, Betamethasone Valerate (Betnoderm) may cause side effects, especially if used for prolonged periods or over large surface areas.

Common Side Effects:

  1. Skin irritation: Redness, itching, burning, or stinging at the application site.

  2. Dryness or peeling of the skin.

  3. Skin thinning or atrophy when used long-term or under occlusion (e.g., with bandages).

  4. Stretch marks (striae) may develop with prolonged use.

Serious Side Effects:

  1. Systemic absorption: Prolonged use or application to large skin areas can lead to absorption into the bloodstream, potentially causing:

    • Cushing's syndrome (moon face, weight gain, and other signs of excessive cortisol).

    • Adrenal suppression, which may affect the body’s ability to produce natural corticosteroids.

    • Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar).

    • Osteoporosis (weakened bones).

    • Glaucoma or cataracts when used near the eyes.

  2. Hypersensitivity reactions: Rare but may include itching, redness, or swelling at the site of application, or more severe reactions such as rash, swelling of the face or lips, or difficulty breathing (signs of an allergic reaction).

  3. Tachyphylaxis (reduced effectiveness over time) if used continuously for long periods.

Contraindications:

Betamethasone Valerate (Betnoderm) should not be used in the following situations:

  1. Hypersensitivity to betamethasone or any other components of the cream.

  2. Viral skin infections: Including herpes simplex, varicella (chickenpox), and shingles (herpes zoster).

  3. Fungal infections: Including tinea and candidiasis.

  4. Bacterial infections: In the absence of appropriate antibacterial therapy, the cream should not be applied to infected areas.

  5. Perioral dermatitis or rosacea: These conditions should not be treated with potent corticosteroids like betamethasone.

  6. Wounds or broken skin: Betamethasone should not be applied to open wounds, broken skin, or areas with compromised skin integrity unless directed by a healthcare provider.

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Betamethasone is classified as a category C drug for pregnancy. It should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is unknown if it is excreted in breast milk, so it should be used with caution in breastfeeding women.

  • Long-term use: Chronic use of potent corticosteroids, such as betamethasone, can result in side effects like skin thinning, adrenal suppression, and systemic absorption. Long-term use should be avoided unless prescribed by a healthcare provider.

  • Occlusion: Avoid occlusive dressings (tight bandages or wraps) unless instructed by a doctor, as this can increase systemic absorption and the risk of side effects.

Summary:

Betamethasone Valerate (Betnoderm) 1mg/g (0.1%) Corticosteroid Cream is a topical corticosteroid used for managing inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis. It works by reducing inflammation, redness, and swelling.

The recommended dosage is a thin layer applied once or twice daily, but it should be used for short periods to prevent adverse effects such as skin thinning and systemic absorption. Prolonged use can lead to serious side effects like Cushing's syndrome, adrenal suppression, and hyperglycemia.

It is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to the drug or in those with viral or fungal skin infections. It should be used cautiously in children, during pregnancy, and while breastfeeding.

Always follow the healthcare provider’s recommendations for optimal use.
