125mg/5ml Suspension

Here’s a detailed overview of Chloramphenicol Palmitate (Typheclor) 125mg/5ml Suspension 60ml:

Product Description:

Chloramphenicol Palmitate (Typheclor) 125mg/5ml Suspension is an oral liquid form of Chloramphenicol, an antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Chloramphenicol works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, thereby preventing bacterial growth and replication. This suspension form, containing 125mg of Chloramphenicol per 5ml, is commonly used for treating infections such as typhoid fever, respiratory tract infections, meningitis, and infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It is typically used when other antibiotics are not effective or in cases of severe bacterial infections.

Indications:

Chloramphenicol Palmitate (Typheclor) 125mg/5ml Suspension is primarily used to treat the following conditions:

  • Typhoid fever (caused by Salmonella typhi).

  • Bacterial infections in various body systems, including respiratory tract infections (such as pneumonia, bronchitis), meningitis, and sepsis.

  • Conjunctivitis or eye infections caused by susceptible organisms.

  • Infections caused by sensitive organisms that are resistant to other antibiotics.

It is typically used in more serious infections where other antibiotics have not been effective or in patients who are allergic to other medications.

Dosage:

The dosage of Chloramphenicol Palmitate (Typheclor) depends on the age, weight, and severity of the infection. Below is the typical dosage:

  • For Adults:

    • The usual dose is 500mg to 1g (20 to 40ml of the 125mg/5ml suspension) every 6 hours. This can be adjusted based on the severity of the infection and the patient’s response.

  • For Children:

    • The dose is usually 25mg/kg to 50mg/kg of body weight per day, divided into 4 doses (given every 6 hours). For example, for a 20kg child, the dose would be 125mg to 250mg (5ml to 10ml) per dose, depending on the physician's prescription.

  • For Severe Infections:

    • Adults may receive higher doses (up to 4g per day in divided doses) in the initial stages, with a reduction to maintenance levels once the infection is controlled.

Note: It is essential to follow the doctor’s prescription for the specific condition being treated. Chloramphenicol should be taken as directed, and the full course of treatment should be completed to avoid resistance.

Side Effects:

While Chloramphenicol Palmitate (Typheclor) is generally effective, it can cause side effects, ranging from mild to severe:

Common Side Effects:

  • Gastrointestinal issues: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or loss of appetite.

  • Headache or dizziness.

  • Rash or other allergic reactions.

Serious Side Effects:

  • Aplastic anemia: A rare but potentially fatal condition where the bone marrow fails to produce enough blood cells. It can lead to severe anemia, infection, or bleeding.

  • Bone marrow suppression: This can lead to reduced red blood cell, white blood cell, and platelet counts.

  • Gray baby syndrome: A potentially fatal condition in neonates and infants due to high blood levels of Chloramphenicol. Symptoms include vomiting, poor feeding, abdominal distension, cyanosis, and shock.

  • Hypersensitivity reactions: Severe allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or skin reactions.

Contraindications:

Chloramphenicol Palmitate (Typheclor) should not be used in the following cases:

  • Hypersensitivity or known allergy to Chloramphenicol or any of its components.

  • Newborns and infants under 1 month of age, due to the risk of gray baby syndrome.

  • Bone marrow disorders: Chloramphenicol can cause bone marrow suppression, so it is contraindicated in individuals with pre-existing bone marrow problems or those who have a history of blood disorders.

  • Severe liver or kidney impairment: Caution is needed, as these conditions can affect the drug's metabolism and clearance.

  • Pregnancy: Chloramphenicol should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary, as it can cross the placenta and may cause harm to the developing fetus.

  • Breastfeeding: Chloramphenicol passes into breast milk, and caution is advised when it is used by breastfeeding mothers, as it could affect the infant.

Precautions:

  • Regular monitoring: Due to the risk of bone marrow suppression, patients on Chloramphenicol Palmitate should be closely monitored with regular blood tests to check for signs of anemia or other blood-related issues.

  • Liver and kidney function: Regular testing is recommended for patients with existing liver or kidney disease.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Use with caution and under medical supervision.

  • Interactions with other drugs: Chloramphenicol may interact with certain medications, including anticoagulants and other antibiotics. Inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are taking.

Note: Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions for Chloramphenicol Palmitate (Typheclor) and inform them of any pre-existing health conditions or medications you are taking.
