Indication/Uses: 

1. Bacterial Infections:

   • Intra-abdominal infections (e.g., peritonitis, abscess)
   • Skin and skin structure infections
   • Gynecological infections (e.g., endometritis, pelvic inflammatory disease)
   • Bacterial vaginosis

Uses:

1. Antibacterial Activity:

   • Metronidazole is effective against anaerobic bacteria, which thrive in environments with low oxygen levels. It works by disrupting the DNA of these bacteria, leading to cell death.

2. Antiprotozoal Activity:

   • It is effective against protozoa such as Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, and Trichomonas vaginalis by inhibiting their nucleic acid synthesis.

3. Prevention of Post-Surgical Infections:

   • Used prophylactically to prevent infections after surgical procedures, particularly those involving the intestines or reproductive organs.

Dosage and Administration:

• Amebiasis:
  • Adults: 500-750mg orally every 8 hours for 7-10 days.
  • Pediatric: Dosage based on body weight.
• Bacterial Vaginosis:
  • 500mg orally twice daily for 7 days.
• Trichomoniasis:
  • Single dose of 2g or 500mg twice daily for 7 days.
• Giardiasis:
  • Adults: 250mg three times daily for 5-7 days.
  • Pediatric: Dosage based on body weight.
