Indication/Uses:

  1. Bacterial Eye Infections

    • Usage: This combination is often prescribed for the treatment of bacterial infections of the eye, such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, and blepharitis. The antibacterial agents target the bacteria causing the infection, while dexamethasone reduces inflammation and associated symptoms like swelling and redness.
  2. Bacterial Ear Infections

  3. Post-Surgical Prophylaxis

    • Usage: This combination may be used postoperatively to prevent infections and manage inflammation following eye or ear surgery.

Mechanism of Action

  • Polymyxin B Sulfate: Acts by disrupting the bacterial cell membrane, leading to cell death. It is effective against gram-negative bacteria.
  • Neomycin Sulfate: Inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria by binding to ribosomal subunits, effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria, including both gram-positive and gram-negative organisms.
  • Dexamethasone: A corticosteroid that reduces inflammation by inhibiting multiple inflammatory cytokines, thereby decreasing swelling, redness, and pain.

Dosage and Administration

  • For Eye Infections:

    • Typically, 1 to 2 drops are instilled in the affected eye(s) every 2 to 4 hours during the initial phase of therapy, which may be adjusted based on the severity of the infection and patient response.
  • For Ear Infections:

    • Generally, 3 to 4 drops are placed in the affected ear(s) 2 to 4 times a day, as directed by the physician.
