Indication/Uses: 

1. Asthma

   • Usage: Aminophylline is used in the management of acute asthma exacerbations. It helps to relax and open the air passages in the lungs, making it easier to breathe.

2. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

   • Usage: It is utilized in the treatment of COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Aminophylline helps to reduce symptoms such as shortness of breath and wheezing by dilating the bronchial tubes.

3. Apnea of Prematurity

   • Usage: Aminophylline is sometimes used in neonatal care to treat apnea of prematurity, a condition where premature infants have episodes of stopped breathing.

4. Congestive Heart Failure

   • Usage: It can be used adjunctively in patients with congestive heart failure to improve respiratory function, although this is less common.

Mechanism of Action

Aminophylline works primarily by inhibiting the enzyme phosphodiesterase, which increases cyclic AMP levels in bronchial smooth muscle cells. This action leads to relaxation of bronchial muscles and bronchodilation. Additionally, it has mild anti-inflammatory effects and can enhance diaphragmatic contractility.
