Indication/Uses: 

  1. Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

    • Usage: Amlodipine is used to lower blood pressure, which helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. It can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other antihypertensive agents.

  2. Angina (Chest Pain)

    • Chronic Stable Angina: It is indicated for the management of chronic stable angina, reducing the frequency of angina attacks and improving exercise tolerance.
    • Vasospastic Angina (Prinzmetal’s Angina): Amlodipine helps in preventing and relieving the chest pain caused by vasospasms (sudden narrowing of a coronary artery).

  3. Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)

    • Usage: Amlodipine is also indicated for the management of confirmed coronary artery disease in patients without heart failure. It helps in reducing the risk of hospitalization for angina and the need for coronary revascularization procedures.

Mechanism of Action

Amlodipine works by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle. This action relaxes the blood vessels (vasodilation), allowing blood to flow more easily and reducing the workload on the heart. As a result, blood pressure is lowered, and the oxygen demand of the heart is decreased, helping to prevent angina.

Dosage and Administration

  • Typical Dosage: The usual initial dose for adults with hypertension or angina is 5 mg once daily, which may be increased to a maximum dose of 10 mg daily based on the patient’s response.
  • Administration: Amlodipine can be taken with or without food. It is typically taken at the same time each day to maintain an even level of medication in the blood.
