Indication/Uses: 

1. Skin and Skin Structure Infections:

   • Effective against infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria, including cellulitis, impetigo, and post-surgical infections.

2. Respiratory Tract Infections:

   • Used to treat bacterial pneumonia, bronchitis, and infections of the lower respiratory tract.

3. Urinary Tract Infections:

Uses:

Mechanism of Action:

• Cefazolin works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, which leads to the death of the bacteria. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) inside the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis.

Dosage and Administration:

• Dosage:
  • The typical adult dose for treating infections is 1g administered every 6 to 12 hours, depending on the severity and type of infection.
  • For surgical prophylaxis, a 1g dose is given 30 to 60 minutes prior to surgery. Additional doses may be given during prolonged surgeries and in the postoperative period.
• Administration:
  • Cefazolin is administered via intramuscular (I.M.) or intravenous (I.V.) injection. The powder is reconstituted with an appropriate diluent before administration.
