Azithromycin (Supmac) 500mg Film Coated Antibacterial Tablets are a prescription medication used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, effectively stopping bacterial growth. These film-coated tablets provide 500mg of Azithromycin per tablet and come in a pack of 3 tablets, typically designed for short-course therapy. The medication is absorbed into the bloodstream and is distributed to the sites of infection, where it exerts its antibacterial effects.
Indications:
Azithromycin (Supmac) 500mg Film Coated Antibacterial Tablets are primarily indicated for the treatment of bacterial infections, including:
Respiratory infections:
Acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Mild to moderate skin infections caused by susceptible bacteria
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs):
Chlamydia trachomatis infections
Gonorrhea (when used in combination with other antibiotics)
Pharyngitis and tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
Sinus infections (acute bacterial sinusitis)
Other bacterial infections that are susceptible to Azithromycin
Dosages:
The usual dosage of Azithromycin (Supmac) 500mg Film Coated Antibacterial Tablets depends on the type and severity of the infection:
General dosage: The typical dose is 500mg once daily for 3 days.
Specific indications:
For respiratory infections (such as pneumonia or bronchitis): 500mg on the first day, followed by 250mg daily for the next 4 days (total of 5 days of therapy).
For chlamydia: A single 1g dose (usually in a single dose of two 500mg tablets).
For gonorrhea: 1g (500mg twice daily for 1 day) in combination with other antibiotics like ceftriaxone.
For skin infections: 500mg once daily for 3 days.
It is essential to follow the prescribed dosage regimen as directed by your healthcare provider, as overuse or misuse of antibiotics can lead to resistance.
Side Effects:
Common side effects of Azithromycin (Supmac) 500mg include:
Gastrointestinal issues:
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain are the most common side effects.
Indigestion or flatulence may also occur.
Dizziness or lightheadedness.
Headache.
Rash or skin reactions.
Fatigue or feeling unwell.
Serious side effects are rare but can include:
QT prolongation (a heart rhythm disorder), which may increase the risk of arrhythmias, especially in those with existing heart conditions.
Liver problems: Jaundice, dark urine, or abdominal pain.
Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), including swelling of the face, throat, lips, or difficulty breathing. If these occur, seek immediate medical attention.
Tendonitis or tendon rupture (in rare cases, especially in older adults).
Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (C. diff), a severe intestinal condition.
Contraindications:
Azithromycin (Supmac) 500mg Film Coated Antibacterial Tablets should not be used in the following situations:
Hypersensitivity to Azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics: Individuals who have a known allergy to Azithromycin, erythromycin, or other related antibiotics should avoid this medication.
Severe liver impairment: Those with severe liver dysfunction or active liver disease should not use Azithromycin, as the drug is metabolized in the liver.
History of QT prolongation or arrhythmias: Azithromycin can prolong the QT interval and may increase the risk of serious heart arrhythmias in patients with a history of heart disease or existing arrhythmias.
Pregnancy (Category B): Azithromycin is generally considered safe during pregnancy, but should only be used if absolutely necessary and prescribed by a healthcare provider. It is advised to avoid its use in the first trimester unless recommended by a doctor.
Breastfeeding: Azithromycin is excreted in breast milk, but it is usually considered safe during breastfeeding. However, it should be used with caution, and a healthcare provider should be consulted.
Notes:
Completion of therapy: Even if symptoms improve, it is essential to complete the full prescribed course of Azithromycin to ensure the infection is completely eradicated and to avoid antibiotic resistance.
Alcohol: While there are no direct contraindications between alcohol and Azithromycin, drinking alcohol may worsen some of the side effects such as gastrointestinal discomfort, so it’s advisable to limit alcohol intake while on this medication.
Drug interactions: Azithromycin can interact with other medications, including anticoagulants, antacids containing aluminum or magnesium, and other drugs that affect heart rhythm (e.g., antiarrhythmics, diuretics). Always inform your healthcare provider of any other medications you are taking.
Storage: Store the tablets at room temperature, away from moisture and heat, and out of the reach of children.
As with any medication, it is important to follow your healthcare provider’s instructions and consult them if you have any concerns or if side effects persist.
