Indication/Uses:

  1. Respiratory Tract Infections: It is effective against bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, including sinusitis, otitis media (middle ear infection), and lower respiratory tract infections like bronchitis and pneumonia.

  2. Urinary Tract Infections: Co-amoxiclav is used to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by susceptible bacteria.

  3. Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: It can be prescribed for bacterial infections of the skin and soft tissues, such as cellulitis or wound infections.

  4. Bone and Joint Infections: In some cases, Co-amoxiclav may be used for bone and joint infections caused by susceptible bacteria.

  5. Intra-abdominal Infections: It can treat certain intra-abdominal infections, although other antibiotics may be preferred depending on the specific type of infection.

  6. Dental Infections: Co-amoxiclav is sometimes used for dental infections, particularly for severe cases or when the infection has spread beyond the tooth.

Co-amoxiclav works by combining amoxicillin, which is a penicillin-type antibiotic, with clavulanic acid. Clavulanic acid helps to overcome resistance mechanisms in bacteria that produce beta-lactamase enzymes, which can otherwise deactivate amoxicillin. This combination broadens the spectrum of bacteria that the medication can effectively target.

It is important to take Co-amoxiclav exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider and to complete the full course of treatment, even if you start to feel better. This helps to ensure that the infection is completely eradicated and reduces the risk of antibiotic resistance.
