Indication/Uses: 

  1. Usage: Febuxostat is indicated for the long-term management of hyperuricemia (elevated levels of uric acid in the blood) in patients with gout. It is used to prevent gout flares and the formation of tophi (uric acid crystal deposits).

  2. Prevention of Gout Flares

    • Usage: During the initiation of febuxostat therapy, it is often used in combination with anti-inflammatory agents such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or colchicine to prevent acute gout flares.

Mechanism of Action

Febuxostat is a selective xanthine oxidase inhibitor. Xanthine oxidase is an enzyme involved in the conversion of hypoxanthine to xanthine and subsequently to uric acid. By inhibiting this enzyme, febuxostat reduces the production of uric acid, thereby lowering its levels in the blood.
