Indication/Uses: 

  1. Vaginal Candidiasis (Yeast Infection)

    • Usage: Fluconazole is commonly prescribed for the treatment of vaginal yeast infections caused by Candida species. A single 150mg dose is often effective for uncomplicated cases.

  2. Oropharyngeal and Esophageal Candidiasis

    • Usage: It is used to treat fungal infections of the mouth and throat (oropharyngeal candidiasis) and esophagus (esophageal candidiasis).

  3. Cryptococcal Meningitis

    • Usage: Fluconazole is indicated for the treatment of cryptococcal meningitis, particularly in patients with HIV/AIDS. It is used both for initial treatment and for maintenance therapy to prevent relapse.

  4. Systemic Candidiasis

    • Usage: Fluconazole is used for systemic infections caused by Candida species, including candidemia, disseminated candidiasis, and peritonitis.

  5. Dermatophytoses

    • Usage: It can be used to treat dermatophyte infections, such as athlete's foot, ringworm, and jock itch, when topical treatments are ineffective.

  6. Prophylaxis in Immunocompromised Patients

    • Usage: Fluconazole is used prophylactically to prevent fungal infections in patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation, chemotherapy, or those with AIDS.

Mechanism of Action

Fluconazole works by inhibiting the enzyme 14α-demethylase, which is necessary for converting lanosterol to ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane. This disruption in the synthesis of ergosterol damages the cell membrane, resulting in cell death.
