Indication/Uses: 

1. Impetigo

   • Usage: Mupirocin is commonly prescribed for the treatment of impetigo, a highly contagious bacterial skin infection characterized by red sores, which can rupture, ooze, and form a yellow-brown crust. It is especially effective against Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA), and Streptococcus pyogenes.

2. Secondary Skin Infections

   • Usage: This ointment is also used to treat secondary bacterial infections that occur in minor skin injuries such as small cuts, wounds, abrasions, and burns. By targeting and eliminating the bacteria, mupirocin helps to prevent the infection from spreading and aids in the healing process.

3. Nasal Carriage of Staphylococcus aureus

   • Usage: While the ointment form is primarily for topical use, there is a nasal formulation of mupirocin that is used to eradicate Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA) from the nasal passages, which can help prevent the spread of infection in settings such as hospitals and healthcare facilities.

Mechanism of Action

Mupirocin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, an enzyme essential for the synthesis of proteins in bacteria. By inhibiting this enzyme, mupirocin effectively stops the bacteria from multiplying, leading to their eventual death.
