Product Description:
Omeprazole (Ranzole) 40mg Delayed Release Capsule is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). It works by reducing the amount of stomach acid produced in the stomach. Omeprazole specifically inhibits the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme (also known as the proton pump), which is responsible for the final step in acid production. This leads to a significant reduction in stomach acid levels, helping to prevent or treat acid-related conditions.
Each Ranzole 40mg capsule contains 40 mg of Omeprazole in a delayed-release formulation, which means the drug is designed to release gradually in the small intestine, where it is absorbed and can act effectively. The product typically comes in a 100-capsule bottle.
Indications:
Omeprazole (Ranzole) 40mg Delayed Release Capsule is used to treat various gastrointestinal conditions related to excess stomach acid, including:
-
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): A condition where stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, causing symptoms like heartburn and irritation.
-
Peptic ulcers: Both gastric ulcers (stomach ulcers) and duodenal ulcers (ulcers in the first part of the small intestine).
-
Helicobacter pylori eradication: Used as part of a combination therapy to treat H. pylori infection, which is associated with ulcers.
-
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: A rare condition in which the stomach produces too much acid due to tumors in the pancreas or duodenum.
-
Acid-related dyspepsia: Relief of symptoms associated with indigestion or discomfort in the upper abdomen.
It is also used to prevent ulcer recurrence and to heal damage caused by acid reflux or ulcers.
Dosage:
Omeprazole (Ranzole) should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The typical dosage for different conditions is as follows:
For Adults:
-
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD):
-
Initial dose: 20-40 mg once daily for 4 to 8 weeks.
-
Maintenance dose: If symptoms persist, the dose may be adjusted to 20-40 mg once daily depending on the severity of the condition.
-
-
Peptic ulcers:
-
Active duodenal ulcer: 20-40 mg once daily for 4 to 6 weeks.
-
Active gastric ulcer: 40 mg once daily for 4 to 8 weeks.
-
-
Helicobacter pylori eradication (combination therapy):
-
20 mg once daily in combination with other antibiotics, typically for 7-14 days.
-
-
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome:
-
60 mg once daily, with the dose being adjusted based on the response. Doses can go up to 120 mg per day.
-
For Children (ages 1-16 years):
-
The dose for children will depend on the condition being treated and the child’s weight. Pediatric doses should be determined by a healthcare provider.
Administration:
-
Omeprazole (Ranzole) should be taken before meals, typically in the morning.
-
The capsules should be swallowed whole, without crushing or chewing. If you have difficulty swallowing the capsule, the contents can be sprinkled on a small amount of applesauce and swallowed immediately.
-
Do not take the capsule with food that could affect its absorption.

Common side effects of Omeprazole (Ranzole) 40mg include:
-
Headache.
-
Diarrhea or constipation.
-
Nausea.
-
Abdominal pain or discomfort.

Flatulence (gas).
-
Dizziness.
Serious side effects are rare but may include:
-
Severe allergic reactions: Symptoms may include rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, and difficulty breathing.
-
Kidney problems: Such as kidney inflammation (acute interstitial nephritis), which may cause swelling, urinary changes, or pain.
-
Bone fractures: Long-term use may increase the risk of fractures, especially in the hip, wrist, or spine.
-
Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea: A bacterial infection that can cause severe diarrhea, especially with prolonged use.
-
Vitamin B12 deficiency: Prolonged use of Omeprazole may impair the absorption of vitamin B12, leading to deficiency.
-
Low magnesium levels: Use of Omeprazole for more than a year may cause hypomagnesemia, which can lead to symptoms like muscle spasms, irregular heartbeats, or seizures.
If you experience any of the more serious side effects, seek medical attention immediately.
Contraindications:
Omeprazole (Ranzole) 40mg Delayed Release Capsule should be avoided or used with caution in the following situations:
-
Hypersensitivity: Known allergy to Omeprazole or any other components of the formulation.
-
Severe liver disease: Use with caution in patients with liver impairment, as Omeprazole is metabolized in the liver. The dose may need to be adjusted.
-
Pregnancy: Omeprazole should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary. It is categorized as a category C drug, meaning there may be risks to the fetus, but the benefits may outweigh the risks in some cases. Always consult a doctor before using this medication during pregnancy.
-
Breastfeeding: Omeprazole is excreted into breast milk. It should be used with caution while breastfeeding, and only if the potential benefits justify the potential risks to the baby.
-
Clostridium difficile infection: If you have a history of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, you should use Omeprazole with caution.
-
Concomitant use with certain medications: Omeprazole may interact with some drugs, including warfarin, clopidogrel, and certain antifungals. Be sure to inform your healthcare provider about any other medications you're taking.
-
Osteoporosis: Long-term use of Omeprazole may increase the risk of bone fractures, so it should be used cautiously in individuals with osteoporosis or those at high risk for fractures.
Precautions:
-
Long-term use: Omeprazole should be used with caution for extended periods, as long-term use (over 1 year) can increase the risk of certain side effects such as bone fractures, low magnesium levels, and vitamin B12 deficiency.
-
Kidney monitoring: If you have kidney problems, your doctor may want to monitor kidney function while you are on Omeprazole.
-
Severe acid reflux: If you have severe GERD or other serious acid-related disorders, Omeprazole can help manage the condition but should be used alongside other lifestyle changes such as diet and weight management.
-
Infections: Omeprazole may increase your risk of certain infections, such as pneumonia and gastrointestinal infections, due to the reduction in stomach acid.
Important Note: Omeprazole (Ranzole) is often used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, which may include dietary changes, weight loss, and the avoidance of certain foods or behaviors that can aggravate acid reflux or ulcers. Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions regarding dosage, diet, and other lifestyle modifications to ensure the best outcome from your treatment.
If you experience persistent or worsening symptoms, consult your doctor immediately for a proper evaluation and adjustment to your treatment plan.
