Product Description:

Phenylpropanolamine Hydrochloride, Chlorphenamine Maleate, Paracetamol (Symdex D) 25mg/2mg/325mg Tablets are a combination medication commonly used to treat symptoms of cold and flu, including congestion, sneezing, runny nose, and body aches. It combines Phenylpropanolamine, a sympathomimetic agent, Chlorphenamine, an antihistamine, and Paracetamol (also known as Acetaminophen), a pain reliever and fever reducer.

Each tablet contains:

  • Phenylpropanolamine Hydrochloride 25mg: A decongestant that works by constricting blood vessels in the nasal passages to reduce swelling and congestion.

  • Chlorphenamine Maleate 2mg: An antihistamine that helps relieve symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes by blocking histamine, a substance involved in allergic reactions.

  • Paracetamol 325mg: A pain reliever and fever reducer used to alleviate mild to moderate pain and reduce fever.

The medication is available in 100 tablets per bottle and is commonly used for the temporary relief of cold and flu symptoms.

Key Features:

  • Active Ingredients:

    • Phenylpropanolamine Hydrochloride 25mg (Decongestant).

    • Chlorphenamine Maleate 2mg (Antihistamine).

    • Paracetamol 325mg (Pain reliever and fever reducer).

  • Formulation: Film-coated tablets for oral use.

    • Sneezing, runny nose, and itchy, watery eyes.

    • Mild fever and headache.

    • Body aches and muscle pain.

  2. Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever):

    • Symptoms of seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis, such as sneezing, itching, and nasal congestion.

The typical dosage of Symdex D 25mg/2mg/325mg tablets is as follows:

  • Adults and children over 12 years: 1 tablet every 4 to 6 hours as needed. Do not exceed 4 tablets per day.

  • Children (6 to 12 years): Typically, half a tablet (12.5mg/1mg/162.5mg) every 4 to 6 hours as needed. However, the dosage for children should be adjusted as per the guidance of a healthcare provider.

Administration:

  • Take orally with a full glass of water.

  • Can be taken with or without food.

  • Do not chew or crush the tablet.

Side Effects:

Like all medications, Symdex D can cause side effects, though not everyone will experience them. Some common and serious side effects include:

  • Common side effects:

    • Drowsiness or sedation (due to Chlorphenamine, the antihistamine).

    • Dry mouth or throat irritation.

    • Dizziness or lightheadedness.

    • Nausea, vomiting, or stomach discomfort.

  • Serious side effects (rare but possible):

    • Severe allergic reactions such as rash, swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), and difficulty breathing.

    • Elevated heart rate, palpitations, or hypertension (due to Phenylpropanolamine).

    • Liver damage (rare, typically associated with excessive Paracetamol use).

    • Severe drowsiness, confusion, or difficulty concentrating.

    • Urinary retention or difficulty urinating (more common in individuals with prostate problems).

If you experience any of these serious side effects, seek medical help immediately.

Contraindications:

Symdex D 25mg/2mg/325mg tablets should not be used in the following situations:

  1. Hypersensitivity (allergic reaction) to any of the active ingredients: Phenylpropanolamine, Chlorphenamine, or Paracetamol.

  2. Severe hypertension (high blood pressure) or heart disease (due to the stimulant effects of Phenylpropanolamine).

  3. Glaucoma (particularly narrow-angle glaucoma) or urinary retention (especially in men with enlarged prostates).

  4. Severe liver disease (Paracetamol can cause liver damage, especially in high doses).

  5. Pregnancy: Consult a healthcare provider before use during pregnancy, as Chlorphenamine and Phenylpropanolamine may not be safe during pregnancy.

  6. Breastfeeding: Chlorphenamine passes into breast milk, and caution is advised when using this medication during breastfeeding.

  7. Children under 6 years: The medication is not recommended for children under 6 years due to safety concerns.

Warnings and Precautions:

  • Liver Disease: Paracetamol can cause liver damage, especially with long-term or excessive use. Limit alcohol consumption while using this medication and avoid taking more than the recommended dose.

  • Drug Interactions: Symdex D may interact with other medications such as MAO inhibitors, other sympathomimetic drugs, and sedatives, including alcohol. Always inform your healthcare provider about other medications you're taking.

  • Alcohol: Alcohol can enhance the sedative effects of Chlorphenamine and increase the risk of liver damage when combined with Paracetamol.

  • Elderly: Older adults may be more sensitive to the sedative effects of Chlorphenamine, which can lead to increased risk of drowsiness, confusion, or falls.

  • Driving and Operating Machinery: Since this medication may cause drowsiness or dizziness, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how it affects you.

  • Chronic Conditions: Use with caution in individuals with diabetes, hyperthyroidism, prostate problems, glaucoma, or high blood pressure.

Drug Interactions:

Symdex D may interact with the following types of drugs:

  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs): The combination of Phenylpropanolamine with MAOIs may cause a hypertensive crisis.

  • Sedative medications: Concurrent use with other sedatives, including alcohol, benzodiazepines, or other antihistamines, may increase drowsiness and impair cognitive function.

  • Other cold or allergy medications: Many cold and allergy medications contain similar ingredients, so using multiple products containing antihistamines or decongestants could increase the risk of side effects.

  • Paracetamol-containing products: Taking multiple medications containing Paracetamol can increase the risk of liver damage.

Storage:

  • Store at room temperature (15°C to 30°C).

  • Keep in a dry place away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.

  • Keep out of reach of children.

Conclusion:

Symdex D (Phenylpropanolamine 25mg, Chlorphenamine 2mg, Paracetamol 325mg) tablets are effective for relieving symptoms of cold and flu, allergic rhinitis, and other upper respiratory infections. The combination of a decongestant, antihistamine, and pain reliever makes it suitable for treating symptoms such as congestion, sneezing, runny nose, fever, and body aches. However, this medication should be used with caution in individuals with certain medical conditions, and it is essential to adhere to the recommended dosage to avoid side effects, especially liver damage due to Paracetamol. Always consult with a healthcare provider if you have concerns or experience side effects.
