Classification: GENERAL ANESTHETIC

Indication/Uses:

  1. Induction of General Anesthesia

    • Usage: Propofol is commonly used to induce general anesthesia in both adult and pediatric patients. It is administered intravenously to achieve a rapid onset of unconsciousness.
  2. Maintenance of General Anesthesia

    • Usage: It is also used for the maintenance of anesthesia in conjunction with other anesthetic agents. Propofol allows for the precise control of anesthesia depth during surgical procedures.
  3. Sedation for Mechanically Ventilated Patients in Intensive Care Units (ICU)

    • Usage: Propofol is utilized for sedation in adult patients who are mechanically ventilated and require a calm and controlled state for effective ventilation and care.
  4. Procedural Sedation

    • Usage: It is used for sedation in diagnostic procedures, such as endoscopies, colonoscopies, and minor surgical interventions. Propofol provides a quick onset and recovery, making it suitable for outpatient procedures.

Mechanism of Action

Propofol works by enhancing the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at the GABA-A receptors in the brain. This action results in hyperpolarization of neuronal membranes, leading to sedation and hypnosis.
