1. Serious Gram-Positive Infections: Vancomycin is primarily used to treat severe infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria, particularly those resistant to other antibiotics. This includes:

   • Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA): Effective against MRSA infections that are resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics.
   • Staphylococcal Infections: Used for serious infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis.
   • Enterococcal Infections: Effective against infections caused by Enterococcus species, especially in cases of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE).
